Chapter 17

Axel

“Hurry, Daddy!” Abby cried as lightning lit up the darkening sky.

“We’re fine, Abby,” I promised, maneuvering the truck around the potholes.

Large raindrops plopped on the windshield, gradually falling faster. The wind had picked up, and I felt the truck sway a little as we traveled along the ravine. By the time we reached the trail leading to our cabin, it was pouring.

“See, we’re here,” I assured her, turning on the windshield wipers. “Just in time.”

I looked at Abby in the rearview mirror and saw that she didn’t appear to be relieved that we’d made it just in time. Her lovely blue eyes met mine in the mirror, and she shook her head, frowning at me. I gave her my best reassuring smile back.

Thunder cracked and echoed through the ravine below. Abby covered her ears, and I again tried to comfort her with my eyes through the mirror and some calming words. Thunder always sounded so much louder and more menacing up in the mountains as it echoed off the stone and through the valleys.

“We’re home now,” I announced. Abby perked up some, though she was still giving the dark sky a worried look.

I pulled into my driveway and up to the front porch so we wouldn’t get too wet. The sky had blackened with storm clouds, but I could see the lights were on inside the cabin. I knew for certain I hadn’t turned on the lights before we left. It was early in the day and sunny outside, so we hadn’t needed any lights on.

The relief of getting Abby home, out of the storm, was replaced with a feeling of dread ─ who the hell was inside of my house?

I looked around and didn’t see any motorcycles, but they could be parked in the woods for all I knew. Damn it, I bought the surveillance system too late, I thought, glancing at the big box resting on the passenger’s seat. Motion lights, cameras, and a few other gadgets just waiting to catch my enemy…

I’d locked the door before I left. I always locked the door. Whoever was inside broke into my family’s home. Instinctively, I reached the pistol I always kept in my glove compartment, but I remembered Abby and didn’t want to scare her. Instead, I looked around for a handheld weapon, and my hand wrapped around a crowbar nestled inside the driver’s side door compartment.

I turned to Abby and stated, “The lights are on inside. I don’t think we left them on.”

“We didn’t.” Abby shook her head, eyes on the front door. “Who’s in there?” she asked calmly. The fear of the storm was replaced by the speculation of who was in our house. To a child, this was simply a guessing game. Abby had no reason to fear whoever turned on the lights. I did.

“I don’t know who’s in there. But I need to find out. Can you sit here for a moment while I go and check?” I asked her, hand on the crowbar.

“No,” she whined.
